Each Hime-wagasa is made entirely by hand in Kyoto by Tsujikura — Japan's oldest wagasa atelier, in continuous practice since the 1690s.
Over one hundred individual steps. Bamboo selected, split, and curved by hand. Washi paper applied one sheet at a time. Silk thread wound between each rib — one knot, one rib, repeated.

This edition is made with washi into which real maple leaves — hand-picked at the moment of autumn colour — have been embedded during papermaking.
Each leaf is held exactly as it was found: veins intact, edges preserved. Held to a window, the forms surface through the paper. The light that passes through belongs to a particular afternoon, in a particular season, that will not come again.

Tsujikura's work has been installed at Cross Hotel Kyoto and featured in Vogue Japan, The New York Times, and Louis Vuitton's City Guide to Kyoto.
