Frequently Asked Questions
About the Wagasa
What exactly is a Hime-wagasa?
Hime-wagasa is a miniature Kyoto parasol, traditionally made for display rather than use. Each one is handcrafted by Tsujikura, a wagasa atelier that has been perfecting this craft in Kyoto since 1690.
We present it as a sculptural object for the home — something that changes the quality of light and space around it.
Is it the same as a decorative umbrella?
No. A Hime-wagasa is made using the same techniques and materials as a full-sized wagasa — washi paper, bamboo ribs, lacquered handles.
The craft is identical. Only the scale has changed.
What you receive is not a souvenir. It is the result of over 100 individual steps, carried out by hand in Kyoto.
Will it fade over time?
Washi paper is sensitive to prolonged direct sunlight. We recommend placing your Hime-wagasa in a position where it receives natural light without direct sun exposure.
Kept this way, it will hold its colour and form for many years.
Can I open and close it?
Yes, gently. The mechanism is functional, as with all Tsujikura wagasa.
We recommend keeping it open for display, as repeated opening and closing over time may stress the paper.
Think of it less as something to operate, and more as something to live with.

Shipping & Delivery
Do you ship to Australia?
Yes. Australia is our primary market.
Shipping is complimentary on all orders.
How long will delivery take?
Orders are prepared and dispatched from Kyoto within 3–5 business days. Delivery to Australia typically takes 7–14 business days from the date of dispatch.
Will I be charged customs duties or taxes?
Your order is shipped on a DDU (Delivered Duty Unpaid) basis. This means that customs duties, if applicable, are the responsibility of the recipient upon arrival in Australia.
For orders under AUD $1,000, import duties are generally not assessed. We recommend checking with your local customs authority if you have concerns.
How is the Hime-wagasa packaged for shipping?
Each piece is carefully wrapped and packed to ensure it arrives in perfect condition. The packaging is designed to protect the wagasa throughout its journey from Kyoto to your door.
Returns & Care
What if my order arrives damaged?
Please contact us within 7 days of delivery with a photograph of the damage. We will assess the situation and make it right.
Our full returns policy is available here.
Do you accept returns for change of mind?
Each Hime-wagasa is handcrafted to order in Kyoto. Because of the nature of the work involved, we are unable to accept returns for change of mind.
We encourage you to reach out before purchasing if you have any questions — we are glad to help.
How do I care for my Hime-wagasa?
Keep it away from direct sunlight and high humidity. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth if needed.
Do not expose it to water. Treat it as you would any fine paper object — with care and patience.
